As the need was realized for a continued regional conference for Opticians in the Southeast,
the decision was made to form a new regional Opticians Conference. Letters of
invitation to join an organizational meeting to decide if a new organization could be formed was sent to ALL of the Southeastern
state associations.
The first organizational meeting was held on June 14, 1998. States that
sent representatives included, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. States
that agreed to commit originally to join the newly formed association included Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina,
and Tennessee. Virginia joined shortly thereafter, with North Carolina joining
in 1999. Florida
joined in 2005.
It was agreed that the organization would have to be a volunteer
organization, with any monies going directly back to the member states to support opticianry.
The second organizational meeting was held on October 18, 1998, where the first officers were elected. The first name was SouthEastern States Opticians Conference and later shortened to SouthEastern Opticians
Conference—SEOC.
